    ICM — Independent Chip Model

ICM (Independent Chip Model) is the mathematical model that translates tournament chips into real dollar value. It's the foundation of every correct decision in bubble stages, Final Tables, and satellites. If you play tournaments without understanding ICM — you're losing money in places you don't even see. This guide gives you everything you need.

    What Is ICM Exactly?

ICM says: your chips in a tournament are not worth their face value. The 1000th chip you win is worth less than the first 1000 you won. That\'s because tournaments pay by place — not by chip count.

ICM calculates the probability of each player finishing in each prize place based on stack sizes, and converts it to expected $$. This is called the "ICM Equity" of the stack.

Example: Why All-in in ICM Differs from ChipEV

Say you\'re on the bubble, 5 players left, places 1-4 pay. You\'re the Chip Leader and a Short Stack shoves. AK vs JJ = 43% equity — in ChipEV terms this is a trivial call.

In ICM: if you lose this hand you drop to medium and hurt your chance of winning badly. The downside is much larger than the upside. ICM says fold AK. It seems crazy — but it\'s mathematically correct.

    Bubble Pressure

    • Big Stack is king of the bubble: can open almost any hand vs medium stacks — they can\'t call without risking their tournament life.
    • Medium Stack is most pressured: you don\'t want to bust in 4th place when the biggest jump is close.
    • Short Stack is relatively free: not much to lose — shove wider than you think.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is ICM in poker?
Independent Chip Model — a mathematical model that converts tournament chips into expected dollar value based on the prize structure and stack sizes of all players. The foundation of every tournament decision, especially on the bubble and Final Table.
Why is ICM more important on the bubble?
Because on the bubble there's a big prize jump between the losing place and the first paid place. ICM pressure on medium stacks makes them fold hands they'd gleefully call in an early stage.
Is ICM relevant in Cash Game?
No. In Cash Game each chip is worth exactly its face value — you play pure ChipEV. ICM is only relevant in tournaments and satellites.
    What is ICMizer?
ICMizer is the most popular ICM analysis tool. It takes stacks, prize structure and blinds, and returns optimal push/fold ranges for every table position.
    Is pure ICM always better?
No — there are situations where deviating from ICM (Future Game Simulation, FGS) is better. But for a beginner, a pure ICM player won't make big mistakes.
