    High Card — High Card

High Card is the weakest hand in poker — 5 cards with no combination, decided by the highest card. Over half of hands end up as high card, but it is almost never the winner at showdown against another active player.

    How is this hand made?

High Card happens when you have no pair, three of a kind, straight, flush or any other combination — just 5 cards of different ranks and mixed suits. The formal name is by the top card: "Ace High", "King High", etc.

Strategy — how to play it

High Card is not a hand to play — it's a fold. If you reach showdown with High Card you were either bluffing or got dragged along. In Hold'em, the goal with High Card is to make opponents fold before showdown, not to show cards.

    What beats what?

    Hands that beat High Card:

    • Royal Flush
    • Straight Flush
    • Four of a Kind
    • Full House
    • Flush
    • Straight
    • Three of a Kind
    • Two Pair

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which is higher — Ace High or King High?
    Ace High. Card order: A > K > Q > J > 10 > 9 > 8 > 7 > 6 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2.
Can a High Card ever win?
Yes, if all remaining active opponents also have only a high card — the highest card wins. But at most poker tables, a hand with a pair or better takes the pot.
What is an "Ace High Bluff"?
A bluff where you push hard with an Ace-high, hoping opponents fold. It only works against weak opponents and in specific spots — not recommended for beginners.
