    How is this hand made?

A straight is 5 consecutive cards. Lowest: A-2-3-4-5 (the "Wheel"). Highest: 10-J-Q-K-A ("Broadway"). The Ace can be low or high but not "wrap around" (Q-K-A-2-3 is not a legal straight).

Strategy — how to play it

Beware the "sucker straight" — a low straight that can be beaten by a higher straight on the same board. Watch for flush threats on the board — if 3 cards of the same suit are showing, your straight is at risk. Value bet carefully.

    What beats what?

    • Royal Flush
    • Straight Flush
    • Four of a Kind
    • Full House
    • Flush

    Hands beaten by Straight:

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can a straight start with an Ace?
Yes, in two cases: A-2-3-4-5 (the Wheel — lowest straight) or 10-J-Q-K-A (Broadway — highest straight). The Ace cannot wrap (K-A-2 is not legal).
How do you rank two straights?
The highest card in the straight decides. 7-8-9-10-J beats 5-6-7-8-9. Two identical straights split the pot.
Which is better — a straight or a flush?
A flush is stronger. Ranking order: flush > straight > three of a kind. A flush is statistically rarer.
